Freestyle, Greco & Off Season Information

Freestyle/Greco Practices at Downingtown West High School are open to our Downingtown Wrestling Community. Practices will run on Tuesdays and Thursdays at The Exton Mall, Turks Head Wrestling Room from 6:00-8:00pm starting on March 18th as well as one Wednesday a month at Downingtown West High School. Boys and girls of all ages and wrestling experiences and levels are encouraged to attend. All current and incoming DMS and West Wrestlers are strongly encouraged to attend practices and events as much as possible from March-October. During this time most of the practices will be based on Freestyle/Greco techniques, however there are often groups who stick to Folkstyle in the room. Speak with coach about the benefits of training all styles, be open minded to practicing Freestyle/Greco.

Wrestlers participating in Coach Breese’s practices are asked to volunteer at the PAUSAW Qualifier hosted at Downingtown West on April 12 & 13th, please see below for links.

Wrestlers are encouraged to wrestle on Saturday at the event.

Downingtown Freestyle/Greco Event

We are in need of volunteers and snack bar donations support the PAUSAW event we host at Downingtown West High School on April 12 & 13th. Please take a moment to sign up.

All practicing with Breese for Freestyle/Greco and School season are asked to lend a helping hand as the proceeds from this event directly impact all of our wrestlers.

Pennsylvania USA Wrestling (PAUSAW) Information

All Freestyle/Greco wrestling in PA goes through PAUSAW, the organization holds various “qualifier” events all spring across the state. Essentially these events are just tournaments, top placers “qualify” for the Freestyle/Greco States in May. However a wrestler can attend as many qualifiers as they like, they also do not have to participate in the state event. These qualifiers are really great ways for all levels to get out and try/practice Freestyle/Greco. See Breese’s practice schedule to see which qualifiers Coach Breese plans to attend. A wrestler must have a USA Wrestling Membership to register for events, please see below for information.

At the high levels, wrestlers are working toward qualifying for USA Wrestling Freestyle/Greco Nationals held in Fargo, North Dakota, this even is often just referred to as “Fargo”.

USA Wrestling Membership

2024-2025 USA Wrestling Cards are MANDATORY at every tournament and must be purchased online prior to registering for the tournament. Athlete Membership can be purchased, at a cost of $50.00 ($65 for open), through USA Wrestling at https://www.usawmembership.com/index.jsp.  Downingtown Thunder Wrestlers already have an account, you will need to upgrade to have it work for Freestyle/Greco Events.

USAW Freestyle/Greco Nationals Sponsorship Requirements for Downingtown West Wrestlers

The Downingtown West Wrestling Booster Club proudly supports PAUSAW National Qualifiers. Downingtown West Wrestlers who qualify, meet specific criteria and submit proper information are eligible to receive financial assistance toward the USAW National trip in Fargo, ND from the Booster Club. See the document at the tab below for requirements and steps to obtain a sponsorship.

This funding is sourced directly from the funds raised from the PA USA Qualifier and Duals event held at Downingtown West on April 12th and April 13th and is dependent on hosting the event. No funds from school Folkstyle season fundraising will be utilized.
